Blog Title: hot or beautiful?

I dislike these kinds of questions as well. Why choose "or" between such adjectives? I prefer "and". We have to stop needing labelled boxes to contain people. (But then what would Cosmo do without those quizzes?!)

I can't fathom set definitions for either of these terms. The women I know are all hot AND beautiful. Is "hot" more of a term to describe sexual energy and "beautiful" one to describe physical appearance? Perhaps but every woman I know is a mesmerizing human being throughout her lifetime - day after day, hour by hour.

I can see a difference between the two words in my mind but whether I can capture it with words is a different issue.
I think Roxanne is right when she mentioned "hot" as being about a sexual energy. There are people that I've met who I consider hot because of the way they dress, the way they carry themselves, and their flirty or provactive nature, but I wouldnt say they are beautiful.
On the other hand I see people who, without fancy clothes, jewellery or make up have looks that are captivating. This does not necessarily make them "hot" and I don't immediately associate their looks with lust.
The one thing I do know is that each person sees it differently. What I think is "hot" or beautiful" is only my opinion. When I see someone that I consider hot or beautiful I don't see it as degrading or labelling people because I think everyone's preferences are a part of who they are. What I don't agree with is making lists of the "Hottest" or "Most Beautiful" for entertainment purposes e.g. magazines

To me the answer is simple ....
A hot girl makes me look
A beautiful girl makes me keep looking ( like you Jedi )

To me, Hot and Beautiful are not on the same axis. Hot, I'd say is purely a physical evaluation. Beautiful... encompasses so much more. There is a woman here who I find absolutely beautiful... the most beautiful woman in the world ot me. There are other women who I might call hotter. But none of them hold a candle to her.

Maybe that doesn't make sense to everyone. but that's how I see it.

I feel the need to clarify my last thought: I meant that those two qualities exist fluidly in every woman and can be exhibited at any moment. Think of a marble and not a coin. :P

(This question reminds of a Tiger Beat quiz about Leif Garrett. I wasn't even a fan but man, I loved that quiz. "Do you like sweet or sexy Leif?" A bunch of situations or pictures, each with the "correct" adjective to describe it. I was about twelve and I'd read those descriptions over and over, simply unable to make up my mind. Sweet AND sexy were just both too appealing to me!!)

It's funny because I couldn't really think of any set definitions for them either, but all of the attempts above coincides with the definitions that the article had. Hot is temporary; beauty is forever. Hot is devious; beauty is innocent. Hot is appearance; beauty is more than skin deep. Hot is smokey-eyed; beauty is bare-faced. Etc... And to be honest, my initial thoughts were along similar lines until I thought about it more critically. So given my initial thoughts and the thoughts shared here (thank you for sharing!), I kind of feel like there are some commonly understood definitions... I disagree with them, of course, but I feel like it's there. So yes, it absolutely does make sense, Henry. :)

When you see those people who are hot because of the way they dress, carry themselves, flirt etc, are they always just hot and not beautiful (to you), Crunchy? I don't think it's necessarily degrading (although in my opinion, being reduced to just how you appear most certainly is), but it continues to feed into the idea that no matter what you do it just isn't enough, sexist, shaming bullshit. I'm wearing make-up so I'm trying too hard and now I'm just fuckable but not beautiful. I'm going all natural and might have features that are aesthetically pleasing so I'm beautiful, but I'm not trying to capture attention so I'll just be passed over. It's just frustrating how it is always one or the other... seems to always boil down to the virgin (beautiful) and the whore (hot) dichotomy.

Showy <3. That is very sweet of you to say xox.

I tend to agree, Rox. I do think that women can be hot AND beautiful at the same moment or from moment to moment. From the article: "Hot is a facade; beautiful is a woman." I don't know. My brain is not functioning well at the moment but I do know that I would prefer to be a mesmerizing human rather than either a hot or beautiful woman! :P

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and opinions everyone. :)

As soon as I saw the subject matter, I knew that this would generate a lot of comments; glad to see I was right. LOL
My mom is beautiful, but I would never say she is hot. LOL.
Everyone of you ladies is beautiful; I think "hot" goes along with that. I don't even think it is a matter of love vs. lust.
Like Crunchy, I know what I'm trying to say, I just can't say it. LOL.
I can see almost the same pic on here from 50 different women - most of the time, my reaction is "meh, seen it before" But if you Jedi, or Rox, or a couple dozen others that I know and adore post it, yeah, it's hot. To me, it's not a matter of which body part is getting the blood flow - that is lust. Lust is the urge to procreate - the original source of sexual desire, known to all creatures in the animal kingdom. The "I'd hit that" response. Hot is just a different form of beauty. I dare say that Rox, Brooke, any of my other friends would look hot draped in burlap; others would just look like a sack of taters.
To sum up - what the hell did this old boy say? LOL. I think, once again, we are seeing a case where simplistic, one or two word definitions fall far short of the mark. The definitions of "hot" "sensual" "sexy" "beauty" are as individual as each of us.

Definitely agree with you there, Tux! Way too simplistic.

Ohhh made me think... To me hot is someone I see and have never spoken to. A stranger I can only describe as "hot" and if I was to get to know said stranger she then would be hot and beautiful. Beautiful to me is just being you inside and out.
